ABOUT AEONIAN FARM

ABOUT AEONIAN FARM
Aeonian Farm is a hand-tended microfarm established in 2020, located in Westport, MA. We grow on a little less than 1 acre, entirely without the use of chemical sprays or fertilizers, or GMOs. Most of our farm is dedicated to diversified annual vegetable production and a small cut-flower enterprise. We are four-season farmers with five unheated high tunnels that we use to grow fresh produce year-round.
Though our farm is not certified organic, we strictly follow growing practices that result in the improvement of our soil's health. These include persistent applications of certified organic compost, and other organic materials, including alfalfa meal, azomite, crab meal, feather meal, kelp meal, menefee humate, and more. Additionally, we do not used tractor-based implements to till our soil, instead favoring hand-tools and drill-powered tillers to prepare our beds for planting. This gentle approach helps us build and preserve organic matter in the soil, while keeping a porous, naturally structured soil intact.
Prioritizing soil health allows us to grow intensively, maximizing the productive potential of the limited space available to us. Since we are not a tractor-based farm, in order to achieve a high level of production, we prioritize using modern, human scale tools that offer flexibility and efficiency, while shrinking our reliance on fossil fuels.
Since our produce is hand-tended and chemical-free, we can ensure that our vegetables are of the utmost quality.
THE NAME
Aeonian, (pronounced ē-ˈō-nē-ən), means perpetual or lasting for an indefinitely long period of time. Many farm names are geographical, describing a permanent feature or landmark of a place. Others are familial, evoking the generational link of farmers to their land. As first-generation farmers, working leased land, we looked for a name that could describe our farm without fixing us to any particular place or region. We felt that "aeonian" conveyed our commitment to responsible land stewardship and sustainable agriculture, which we define as being able to farm on the same plot of land, year after year.
THE FARMERS
KATE GETZ
Kate started out her post-college working life as operations manager at a research institute in Washington, DC. She abandoned her desk chair after she fell in love with farming during an around the world journey volunteering on farms. She worked for a year as a crew member at Riverbank Farm in Roxbury, CT (where she met Andrew). Then worked for a year as assistant manager at Four Season Farm in Harborside, ME. Kate loves to bake sourdough bread, stink up the house with fermentation experiments, and forage for (easy to identify) mushrooms.

ANDREW ASHBROOK
Andrew began farming in 2014, volunteering at the Battery Urban Farm in New York City. After participating in the Brooklyn Grange's farmer training program later that year, he knew he had found his calling. Committing to farming full-time, Andrew left New York for Roxbury, CT, where he worked at Riverbank Farm between 2015 - 2018. Kate & Andrew met during Andrew's fourth season at Riverbank, and soon they were dreaming of a farm of their own. In 2019, they moved to Harborside, ME to work at Four Season Farm, where they learned to grow fresh vegetables through the harsh conditions of New England winter. In 2020, they began leasing land at Stone Fruit Farm, a private incubator farm and eco-conscious homestead designed and managed by Hank Keating & Deborah Judd. There, Aeonian Farm was born! When Andrew is not farming, which is in reality impossible, he enjoys cooking, reading, and playing the guitar.
